Marvel Zombies is one of the newest animated Marvel shows to release in 2025, alongside the previous release of the new Spider-Man cartoon, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. But, unlike Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies is more mature, high-stakes, less friendly, and monstrously gory. It is a show that presents the heroes becoming the monsters…
Marvel Zombies takes place in a different universe where a mysterious zombie virus overtakes the world of heroes and villains, from the Avengers to the powerful Thanos. In this world, we follow the young, surviving Ms. Marvel, or Kamala Khan, as she embarks on a journey to save the world from this infection alongside remaining heroes such as Spider-Man, Shang-Chi, Blade the Vampire Hunter, and Ant-Man against the Queen of the Dead, the Scarlet Witch. However, as the journey continues, the question of hope and salvation is put into question as not all as it seems for these surviving heroes.
With the show taking on a darker approach to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it takes advantage of the source material by exploring different avenues of the universe involving many heroes from different films, similar to an Avengers team-up movie. Furthermore, embracing its mature rating with being bloody and violent, and not holding back when it came to killing off beloved characters, added more stakes to the story. However, with the mature tone and world-building, there are conflicting tones in the story with its use of humor against the mature tone. Especially making it underwhelming when there’s an impactful moment happening in the story. As interesting as the idea of the show is, it felt limited in some areas with the writing, exploration of the world, characters, and pacing within the episodes. It only raises more questions than answers to the plot.
Overall, Marvel Zombies, while limited, is still an enjoyable experience to watch and stream for its animation, use of violence, characters, and set-pieces. While it isn’t as grand as something like Avengers: Endgame, or as violent and dark, based on the original Marvel Zombies comics by the Walking Dead creator that the show is adapting. It is enough for the audience to keep their attention on, and a unique take on superheroes as zombies. I believe it’s a good show to enjoy during the Halloween season.
